When a Stranger Is Kind

My brother was over last night and we were hanging out on the couch watching DVDs. I suddenly noticed someone walking up my front path to the front door.
“Who the hell could that be?” I said as my brain said to itself “What now? What does this person want?”
I opened the door to a woman who announced “You’ve left your lights on.” It took me a second to realize what she was talking about. I looked out the front and indeed my brother had left the lights of his car on.
“Thank you!” I called out as she walked back to her car.
Yes, this woman had been driving down the street, noticed a parked car with its lights on, stopped, walked up and knocked on a stranger’s front door to save them the trouble of a flat battery. Sure it was simple thing and it was just a moment out of her day but a moment of such courageous kindness from a stranger is a very rare thing indeed.
Sometimes the world IS what I wish it would be.

  1. Nice. I've done this a couple of times over the years. It's always felt worthwhile.

  2. Wow. Not just kindness, but effort out of her way too, which is lovely.
