We Want The Evil Dead!
I am so angry right now.
On the weekend I went looking at my local cinema
chain website to see when I could see Evil Dead there. I couldn’t find it listed
in their Coming Soon section so I clicked on Contact Us and sent them an e-mail
asking when I’d be able to see it.
I just got the answer back: It is no longer being
released theatrically and will go right to DVD.
It’s Cabin in the Woods all over again!
I did a quick google search and sure enough, like
Cabin in the Woods, there has been a massive outcry from the Aussie horror
community about this (how did I miss that?) and they have granted us a very limited cinema release. But
unlike some people I’m not giving a big yay to this.
I don’t live in Sydney. Getting to the one cinema
in my entire state where this film will be playing for a short time is not going
to be the easiest of tasks. It's not out of the realm of possibility to get there, but it's a very long way to go for a movie, even one I'm really wanting to see. It will take more than twice the amount of time
travelling to and from than it will take to watch the movie.
Sony – I want to give you my money to see this
film. But you have to meet me half way. I’m already hyped to see it. I want to
see it. I may very well go on a long trek to see it. BUT WHY THE HELL SHOULD I HAVE
TO WHEN THERE IS A CINEMA 20 MINS AWAY WHERE I COULD SEE IT IF ONLY YOU WOULD
LET ME. And there are plenty of people who are even further away from the few major
cities where it is playing than I am. It’s a bloody big country, you know?
I know, I know, this is hardly the greatest
injustice in the world. I shouldn’t get upset over a movie. I will get to see it
on DVD soon enough. Blah, blah, blah. Shut up. Just let me be upset about this,
ok? Because it isn't fair, and it isn't the first time this has happened! See the Cabin in the Woods Aus release saga. It is exactly the same thing again.
There is a really enthusiastic horror fan community who have been wanting to
see this for ages. We want to sit in a darkened theatre with other people and
have the shit scared out of us together. These are the sort of films that are
just begging to be experienced with a large like-minded crowd. We’ve been
reading all the tweets from international friends who have seen it and are
raving about it. Like Cabin before it we had this juicy piece of meat dangling
in front of us before having it very rudely yanked away. Why does this keep
happening?
I AM PISSED. WHAT THE FUCK?!
Is there just not enough profit to be made here?
If we are working off the assumption that there is a specific percentage of any
given population who will pay to see a horror film in a cinema, and given that
Australia has a smaller population than, say, the USA, yes you’re probably not
going to make as much money out here. Fine. But I can’t believe there is not
money to be made at all. There is a horror community out here who really, really
want to see good horror movies on the big screen and will gladly pay to do
so.
Even more than that there is a horror community
who are struggling to create their own identity and create their own films out
here. (I’ve recently decided to join them after watching from the fringe for so
long, but that’s another story). And if the big internationals are pulling away
it’s nothing but discouraging for the little locals. This is probably a symptom
of a much wider and deeper problem, which could be explored at length so I won’t
digress and I will get back on track now.
I’m interpreting this as a big ‘screw you’ to all
Australian horror fans. It’s so tempting to say SCREW YOU RIGHT BACK, SONY
PICTURES. We are not happy. But I won’t. I’ve known since I was two that
throwing a tantrum is not the way to get what you want. So ignore this
paragraph.
And the overall angry tone of the rest of this post. Just read from the here:
Please, Sony Pictures, will you give us Evil
Dead? Please?
